Getting started

New to Gotta Tap? Here's what to do, in order. The First Steps story quest walks you through the start too.

1. Pick a starter

Choose one: BulbasaurCharmanderSquirtlePikachu. You beat it in a friendly battle and it joins you. You start with 25 Poké Balls.

2. Battle on routes

  • Go to Route 1. Wild Pokémon appear one after another; your team attacks them by itself every second.
  • Tap the enemy to hit it yourself as well — early on, tapping does most of the work.
  • Defeat 10 Pokémon on a route to open the next places on the map.
  • Every Pokémon you own fights, so catch everything: more Pokémon = more attack and stronger clicks.

3. Catch and earn

  • After a defeat, a ball is thrown by your AUTO-CATCH rules (ITEMS). Set one for "Already caught" as well: those catches pay Cave Tokens.
  • Buy more Poké Balls in Viridian City's Poké Mart with ₽ from battles.
  • Defeats on early routes give you key items: Dungeon Ticket (Route 2), Day Care (Route 3), Wailmer Pail (Route 11), Super Rod (Route 12). See key items.

4. Dungeons

With the Dungeon Ticket and enough tokens, enter Viridian Forest. A dungeon is a small map with Pokémon, chests, trainers and a boss — beat the boss before the timer runs out. See Dungeons.

5. Gyms and badges

Gym Leaders fight with a team on a timer. Each badge opens new places and raises your level cap by 10. See Gyms for every leader's team and the type to bring.

6. Then…

7. Beyond Kanto

Becoming the Champion is not the end. The Orange Islands, Johto, more Sevii Islands, Hoenn, Orre and the Battle Frontier open one after another. See Regions & travel for what opens them, and how your Pokémon's attack changes away from home.

Tips

  • Stuck on a gym? Check the types: a team that's strong against the leader's Pokémon can be many times stronger.
  • Your goal for the next step is shown in the game (the "next goal" line); the map colours tell you what's left on each place.
  • Before you close the game, stand on the hardest route you beat quickly — you'll earn ₽ while away.

Everything here comes straight from the game's data, so it always matches the current version of Gotta Tap. Gotta Tap is a fan game; Pokémon belongs to Nintendo, Game Freak and The Pokémon Company.
