Poké Balls
After a defeat, the game throws a ball by your auto-catch rules (ITEMS → AUTO-CATCH): one for new Pokémon, one for new shinies, and so on. The catch chance is the Pokémon's own chance plus the ball's bonus. Better balls also catch faster.

Evolution items
Used from the bag on a Pokémon you own: you get the evolved Pokémon and keep the one you had. The Linking Cord stands in for trading. Some items only go on sale once you have reached the region of the Pokémon they evolve.

Eggs
Put an egg in the Day Care and it hatches into one of its Pokémon after enough battling.
Once you have reached Johto and Hoenn, eggs can hatch their Pokémon too: the list of the newest region you have reached comes up half of the time, the one before it a quarter, and the oldest gets what is left. A Mystery Egg first picks one of the egg types at random.
