Walking
- Move with the pad (or arrow keys). Each step on grass or water has a 5% chance of an encounter.
- Some Pokémon walk around on the field where you can see them; step on one to battle it. They leave after a while.
- Items appear on the field after a catch. Walk onto one to pick it up.
- Your eggs keep walking too: every step counts as egg steps (more at higher Safari levels).
- The visit ends when you run out of Safari Balls, or when you leave.
In a battle
| Action | What happens |
|---|---|
| Ball | Uses one Safari Ball and tries to catch it. |
| Bait | It starts eating for a few turns: half as easy to catch, but far less likely to run (÷4). |
| Rock | It gets angry for a few turns: twice as easy to catch, but twice as likely to run. |
| Run | Leave the battle and keep walking. |
After every ball that misses, bait or rock, it may run away (base 30%).
Baits
Plain bait is always there. Berries from your farm work as bait with an extra effect, which lasts until you throw another bait:
- Bait — Eats: harder to catch, runs less
- Razz Berry — Eats, and is easier to catch
- Nanab Berry — Eats, and runs away even less
- Pinap Berry — Eats; catching it may drop an extra item
Catch chance
The catch chance is the Pokémon's catch rate ÷ 6, plus your Steady Hand (Lab item) and a small Safari-level bonus. Some examples at Safari level 1 without the Steady Hand:
| Pokémon | Normal | Eating | Angry | Runs (normal / eating / angry) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5.0% | 2.5% | 10.0% | 30.0% / 7.5% / 60.0% | |
| 7.5% | 3.8% | 15.0% | 30.0% / 7.5% / 60.0% | |
| 7.5% | 3.8% | 15.0% | 30.0% / 7.5% / 60.0% |
Shiny Pokémon appear 1 in 4,096 here (the Shiny Charm helps).

Items
Each catch has a chance to drop an item on the field (40% at level 1, +1% per level). A Pinap Berry gives a second try. What it is:
Safari level
Safari EXP comes from everything you do here: 10 per rock, ball or item, 5 per bait, 50 per catch (shinies 250). Higher levels make Pokémon easier to catch and less likely to run, drop more items and walk your eggs faster. Max level 40.
